Necco and MHNet Join in Pilot Program to Assist KY Families at Risk

Deeply troubled children and their families in rural Hazard, Kentucky now have more resources to turn to for help, thanks to a new program that provides Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT). MHNet Behavioral Health is joining with the behavioral health provider Necco to embark on a pilot project that focuses on youth in various dispositions, including those at risk of placement into residential treatment or similar programs, and youth targeted for reunification with their families. MHNet and Medicaid managed care company CoventryCares of Kentucky, both Aetna companies, will cooperate in the pilot.

Intensive Home-Based Treatment offers both diversion and reunification programs using evidence-based practices. With its focus on the root causes of dysfunction, the IHBT model aims to reduce future crimes and other problems by focusing on education, employment and overall ability to function independently. Through this work, IHBT is working to improve the long-term outcomes for youth, families and communities at a lower cost than more restrictive interventions such as residential care.

Populations eligible for IHBT include youth in danger of out-of-home placement due to juvenile justice involvement, mental health issues, substance abuse and other serious behaviors, and/or serious family conflict such as abuse or neglect. The program also serves youth in adoptive placements in danger of disruption, as well as youth returning home from a residential or foster care placement.

Appropriate for youth ages 18 and under who are living with a parent, relative or guardian functioning in a parent role, the IHBT program includes (but is not limited to) services such as individual and family therapy, case management, crisis intervention and safety planning, parenting skills, drug testing and more.
