Beau Necco and Paul Haffner’s Relay Team Finishes Strong

Beau Necco May Not Have Taken First, But Foster Youth Win

It was before dawn when Beau Necco, Paul Haffner, Elissa Veite and Heather Martin made their way to their respective start locations for the 20th running of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon on Sunday, May 6. Beau Necco, CEO of Necco, Inc. was at the start for Team “For the Kids.” He lined up with 20,000 other full and half marathoners, waiting for the 6:30 a.m. gun.

Beau ran the first leg traversing 6.38 miles across two Ohio River bridges and a long hill to Eden Park, where he handed the baton off to Elissa Veite from Lighthouse Youth and Family Services. According to Beau, she “took off like a bat…,” to begin her 5.36-mile trek through the Cincinnati neighborhood of Hyde Park. Lighthouse CEO Paul Haffner took the 3rd and longest leg—7.45 miles through Cincinnati’s east side while Beau’s girlfriend, Heather Martin, finished the job, running 7.01 miles to the “Finish Swine.”

Final time: 3:58:35 - beating their team goal by 1 minute and 25 seconds.

Of course, these four had another goal in mind.

As we shared in in this post last month, the effort was to raise money for Hamilton County Job and Family Services’ FAMILY (Friends and Advocates Making Investments in Local Youth) Fund, a tax-exempt charitable fund to cover incidental expenses for foster youth. Costs for things like sports leagues, class trips, or a reliable car are not covered by public funds, yet can greatly impact a child’s sense of normalcy.

As of today, the relay team raised $1,070 for the fund.

“We are so grateful to Beau, Paul, Elissa and Heather for their effort and wish to congratulate them on their strong finish,” said Moira Weir, Director of Hamilton County Job and Family Services. “Thanks to Lighthouse and Necco, the foster children of Hamilton Co. will be able to have some of the same wonderful, youthful experiences and memories as their peers, which will greatly contribute to their quality of life.”
